( UPDATE - APPLICATIONS NOW ACCEPTED UNTIL MARCH 1 )  Applications are now being accepted for NASA’s Graduate Student Researchers Project. Through GSRP, NASA awards fellowships for graduate study leading to research-based master’s or doctoral degrees in science, mathematics and engineering fields related to NASA research and development.

GSRP supports approximately 300 graduate students annually. Applicants must be currently enrolled or accepted as full-time students at an accredited U.S. college or university. Applicants must also be U.S. citizens.

All application materials must be received no later than March 1, 2008. For more information, visit:

Motivating Undergraduates in Science and Technology (MUST) Scholarships – Deadline March 1, 2008

( UPDATE APPLICATIONS NOW ACCEPTED UNTIL MARCH 1, 2008 )  The Motivating Undergraduates in Science and Technology Project, funded by NASA, is a joint partnership between the Hispanic College Fund, the United Negro College Fund Special Programs and the Society for Hispanic Professional Engineers.

MUST awards scholarships and internships to undergraduate students pursuing degrees in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, also known as STEM fields. The MUST Project is open to all undergraduate students and is particularly focused on engaging students from underserved and underrepresented groups to enter STEM fields.

Each year, the MUST Project supports approximately 100 undergraduate students with a one-year competitive scholarship of up to one-half of tuition, not to exceed $10,000. Students who maintain the required minimum grade point average will be eligible for a paid internship at a NASA center or other research facility. Additionally, students will benefit year-round from tutoring, lecture series and mentoring from STEM faculty and peers.

The application period closes on March 1, 2008. For more information, visit:

(From Our Friends at OMSI in Portland Oregon)

SPACE SHUTTLE ATLANTIS STS-122

OMSI in Portland Oregon will offer space exploration enthusiasts a front row seat to watch Stanley Love from Eugene, Oregon and NASA’s Space Shuttle Atlantis STS-122 launch into space Thursday, February 7 at 11:00 a.m. for the 11:45 a.m. PST launch and flight to the International Space Station (launch dates and times subject to change).  OMSI will be showing the lift-off in the auditorium live via satellite on NASA TV. Admission for the televised launch is free.

Space shuttle Atlantis’ upcoming 11-day mission will deliver a key component to continue construction of the International Space Station. During the first of three spacewalks, a laboratory module, known as Columbus, will be installed. The following day, astronauts will enter the European Space Agency’s module for the first time, expanding the research facilities of the station and providing crew members and scientists around the world the ability to conduct a variety of life, physical and materials science experiments. The shuttle also will deliver a new crew member and bring back another astronaut after a nearly two-month mission.

Joining Commander Frick on STS-122 will be pilot Alan Poindexter and mission specialists Leland Melvin, Rex Walheim, Stanley Love and European Space Agency astronauts Hans Schlegel and Leopold Eyharts. Eyharts will replace current station crew member Dan Tani, who has lived on the outpost since October. Eyharts will return to Earth on shuttle Endeavour’s STS-123 mission, currently targeted for launch on March 11, 2008.

Dr. Stanley Love was born June 8, 1965 in San Diego, California, but considers Eugene, Oregon to be his hometown. Married, with two children. His recreational interests include martial arts, alpine hiking, reading and writing science fiction, and appreciation of new music, cult films, and anime. His parents, Glen A. and Rhoda M. Love, reside in Oregon.

Dr. Love graduated from Winston Churchill High School, Eugene, Oregon, in 1983. Earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Physics from Harvey Mudd College, Claremont, California, in 1987. Attended graduate school in Astronomy at the University of Washington in Seattle, receiving a Master of Science degree in 1989 and a Doctor of Philosophy degree in 1993.
