In commemoration of the 40th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing, the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C., is holding Countdown to the Moon Day. This free event will take place on July 16, 2009, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the National Mall building.
Countdown to the Moon Day will feature a variety of fun and educational family activities throughout the museum. Visitors will be able to talk with scientists who are active in lunar research and mission planning. Visitors can also touch a real piece of the moon, learn about lunar geology and see images of the lunar surface in 3-D. Hands-on activities are also planned.
