NASA Explorer Schools and the National Science Teachers Association are hosting a 90-minute live professional development Web seminar on Nov. 1, 2011, at 6:30 p.m. EDT. Online Professional Development Workshop: Enrichment Problems in Space and Earth Science XXIX – Oct 5, 2011

Topic: Enrichment Problems in Space and Earth Science XXIX

In the 29th installment of these mission- and inquiry-oriented mathematics problems, Dr. Sten Odenwald will supply background for and lead participants through problems from his “Problems in Space Science” series. The goal of these problems is to teach students about space and Earth science by using mathematics. Each problem begins with real world questions, missions and situations, and applies the necessary mathematics to arrive at a solution. Problem 434: Dawn Spacecraft Sees Asteroid Vesta Up-Close!

NASA Education Materials Featured on the Howtosmile.org Website

NASA educational materials are available on the new Howtosmile.org website. Launched by the University of California, Berkeley’s Lawrence Hall of Science, the Howtosmile.org website is an online collection of thousands of hands-on interactive science and math activities dedicated to making learning exciting and engaging for everyone. All activities at http://www.howtosmile.org are freely accessible and never require a registration or subscription.

Howtosmile.org brings together a consortium of science museums across the country to empower educators working with school-aged children in science, mathematics, engineering and technology. The website provides a digital infrastructure to allow informal science institutions to broaden their reach to informal educators across the U.S.

Howtosmile.org spotlights hands-on and interactive activities, both physical and virtual, that involve doing and learning. Activities take many forms, from downloadable lesson plans to field trip activities, how-to videos and online interactive games.

Howtosmile.org is funded by the National Science Foundation as part of the National Science Digital Library. The website is a joint project of UC Berkeley’s Lawrence Hall of Science, the Exploratorium, the New York Hall of Science, Science Museum of Minnesota, Children’s Museum of Houston, and the Association of Science-Technology Centers.

NASA Seeking Proposals for Two New Science, Engineering, Mathematics and Aerospace Academy Sites

NASA is seeking proposals to establish two new SEMAA sites. Established in 1993, the Science, Engineering, Mathematics and Aerospace Academy is an innovative, pre-college project designed to increase participation and retention of historically underrepresented youth (grades K-12) in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics, or STEM. The project currently serves over 50,000 students, parents and teachers annually at 15 locations nationwide. Through this new RFP, NASA is seeking to partner with two- and four-year institutions, specifically Historically Black Colleges and Universities, or HBCU; Hispanic Serving Institutions, or HIS; Tribal Colleges and Universities, or TCU; and Other Minority Universities, or OMU, to expand and replicate the SEMAA project to include two additional sites. Interested institutions responding to the RFP are encouraged to partner with local school systems to introduce underserved minority students and their families to the project.

A hard copy of the RFP can be requested through the National SEMAA Office. Please note that there is a quick turn-around time to submit proposals. New NASA Website Aims to Engage and Educate Advanced High School Students

Advanced students require challenging materials to keep them focused on their studies and to help provide them insight into the limitless array of options in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, or STEM, fields.

NASA’s Math and Science @ Work project offers challenging supplemental problems based on space exploration topics. This project engages students by providing real-world applications to promote critical thinking and problem-solving while exposing students to careers in space exploration.

These problems are for high school students in advanced classes, grades 10-12, and are formatted in a free-response style. Problems are available for calculus, physics, biology, chemistry, U.S. history and human geography.
