Starting this evening and running through the early hours of tomorrow morning, the 2009 Perseid meteor shower should put on quite a show. The peak of the shower is expected on August 12th at around 8:00 a.m. PDT (15.00 hours UT) but meteors should also be visible on the evening of August 11 (Tuesday). Although the Perseid shower can produce up to 60 meteors per hour, the bright moon, light pollution, and other factors may limit the average observer’s ability to see. Viewers in areas with little light pollution should expect to see one or two meteors per minute.
