NASA Seeking Proposals for Two New Science, Engineering, Mathematics and Aerospace Academy Sites

NASA is seeking proposals to establish two new SEMAA sites. Established in 1993, the Science, Engineering, Mathematics and Aerospace Academy is an innovative, pre-college project designed to increase participation and retention of historically underrepresented youth (grades K-12) in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics, or STEM. The project currently serves over 50,000 students, parents and teachers annually at 15 locations nationwide. Through this new RFP, NASA is seeking to partner with two- and four-year institutions, specifically Historically Black Colleges and Universities, or HBCU; Hispanic Serving Institutions, or HIS; Tribal Colleges and Universities, or TCU; and Other Minority Universities, or OMU, to expand and replicate the SEMAA project to include two additional sites. Interested institutions responding to the RFP are encouraged to partner with local school systems to introduce underserved minority students and their families to the project.

A hard copy of the RFP can be requested through the National SEMAA Office. Please note that there is a quick turn-around time to submit proposals. NASA DIME Program for High School Students

HIGH SCHOOL TEAMS SHOULD DROP EVERYTHING!

Dropping In a Microgravity Environment (DIME) is a NASA competition for high-school-aged teams to create a microgravity (a.k.a. weightless) science experiment or engineering test in an end-to-end program. The student teams develop the concept, design the equipment, construct the apparatus, and analyze the resulting data. Top-ranked teams in the competition win a trip to NASA Glenn in Cleveland, Ohio to operate their experiment in the 2.2 Second Drop Tower.

This is not just a cookie-cutter experiment where students follow instructions to build an experiment. It’s their concept, their design, their construction, and their data analysis.

The DIME Program Announcement contains the information necessary to prepare a DIME competition entry by November 1. Selection of winning teams will be announced in early December with operation of the experiments in the drop tower in late March 2011. A separate but related competition called WING is available for teams in grades 6-9.

Registration Open for NASA Explorer School Project

The NASA Explorer Schools project is NASA’s classroom-based gateway for middle school (grades 4-8) and high school (grades 9-12) classrooms. NES provides free teaching and learning resources that promote student engagement in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, or STEM. The project provides opportunities for teachers and students to participate in NASA’s mission of research and discovery through inquiry-based experiences directly related to the work of NASA scientists and engineers.

Throughout the school year, the NES Virtual Campus website will serve as a portal to dynamic learning experiences, allowing students to examine real-world problems and challenges based on NASA research and exploration. Classroom activities are coupled with special events featuring interactions with NASA’s scientific and technical workforce, so students learn firsthand about mission highlights, new technologies and research findings.

Teachers have the opportunity to participate in professional development experiences delivered through NES Virtual Campus technology to support effective classroom implementation of NES resources.

At the end of the year, NES will recognize its best teachers and schools with NASA experiences such as field center training, research opportunities and flights aboard a reduced-gravity aircraft.

All participants must be U.S. citizens. Each must be an administrator, aide, curriculum specialist, educator, guidance counselor, media specialist, resource teacher or student teacher in a state- or nationally accredited K-12 education institution in the United States or a U.S territory.
