Oregon NASA Space Grant 2013-14 Scholarship Call Now OPEN

The Oregon NASA Space Grant Consortium (OSGC) is pleased to provide students attending our member colleges and universities opportunities to apply for scholarship awards that support their academic goals and recognize their achievements. Scholarships are open to new and continuing students in the disciplines of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), and STEM education disciplines. The scholarship program supports the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) objectives of fostering and encouraging career goals in STEM and STEM education. Individuals from under-represented groups in the STEM fields are encouraged to apply.

Several unique scholarship opportunities exist catering to different degree programs, career goals, and institution types. Details regarding each of these opportunities are found in the Scholarship Guide, available for download on the OSGC website scholarship page. Please read the Scholarship Guide carefully for eligibility requirements, application instructions and links to the online application system.

Scholarships are awarded through a competitive process. Note: Students receiving awards in past competitions may apply and receive awards for subsequent competitions.

NICE_Patch_200x200NASA Innovations in Climate Education (NICE) Teacher Professional Development Workshop Series is seeking teacher participants! Join NICE on April 9th, 11th, 16th, and 18th from 4:00 – 5:20 pm EST. One-way or two-way virtual participation options available.

From greenhouse effect to Earth’s rising temperatures and resulting impacts on plants, bugs and birds, increase your understanding of these timely topics and more at the NICE Teacher Professional Development Workshop. This workshop is a four-part series featuring climate literacy content and classroom resources from NASA and NICE Earth Systems Scientists. It is open to all Science, Technology, Engineering and Math K-12 teachers. The content will be geared toward the 5-9 grade band.

Bag of Bones Classroom Activity – Grades K-8

Let’s crunch some bones!

Students test bone density using plastic snack bags, corn puff cereal and a heavy book. They apply the scientific method to determine degrees of bone loss and learn why healthy bones are important in space and on Earth.

  • Corn puff cereal (approx. 4.5 oz. per group)
  • Ziplock snack bags (6 5/8 inch x 3 ¼ inch) – 5 per group (larger bags holdtoo much cereal to count in a reasonable amount of time)
  • Permanent markers for labeling bags
  • Heavy books (one per group)
  • Student Activity Guide (one per student)
  • Broom and dustpan (for clean-up)

Time Required:

This activity may be spread out over a two- or three-day period. You maywish to use the first day for discussion and baggie preparation, and the second and third days for experimentation, data collection, and discussion.

NASA Science Mission Directorate Seeks Educator Professional Development Feedback – Deadline September 10, 2012

The NASA Science Mission Directorate (SMD) is strongly committed to enhancing the nation’s science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education. As part of that commitment, each of the four divisions within the SMD established an Education and Public Outreach (E/PO) Forum. Each Forum consists of a team of scientists and educators that coordinates activities using NASA science content, expertise, and facilities.

One of the areas on which the Forums are currently focusing is teacher professional development. In an effort to continue offering the most valuable professional development experience possible, the Forums are seeking expert input.

Student CubeSat Space mission Opportunity – Proposal Deadline November 12, 2012

NASA is seeking proposals for small satellite payloads to fly on rockets planned to launch between 2013 and 2016. These miniature spacecraft, known as CubeSats, could be auxiliary payloads on previously planned missions.

CubeSats are a class of research spacecraft called nanosatellites. These cube-shaped satellites are approximately four inches long, have a volume of about one quart and weigh less than three pounds.

Proposed CubeSat investigations must be consistent with NASA’s Strategic Plan and the NASA education vision and goals. The research must address aspects of science, exploration, technology development, education or operations.

Applicants must submit proposals electronically by 4:30 p.m. EST, Nov. 12, 2012. NASA will select the payloads by Jan. 31, 2013. Selection does not guarantee a launch opportunity. The selected spacecraft will be eligible for flight after final negotiations when a launch opportunity arises. NASA will not provide funding for the development of the small satellites.

NASA recently announced the results from the third round of the CubeSat Launch Initiative. From the first three launch initiatives, 64 payloads made the short list for launch opportunities between 2011 and 2014. They are eligible for launch pending an appropriate opportunity and final negotiations. The satellites come from 25 states: Alabama, Alaska, California, Colorado, Florida, Hawaii, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Missouri, Montana, North Dakota, New Hampshire, New Mexico, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, Utah, Vermont and Virginia.

Enter the International Humans in Space Art Competition by October 21, 2012

The international 2012 Humans in Space Youth Art Competition invites students ages 10-18 to express their ideas about the future of human space exploration through visual, literary, musical or digital art.

Artwork submissions will be judged on creativity, skill and demonstration of meaning relevant to expressing “How will humans use science and technology to explore space, and what mysteries will we uncover?”

Winning art will be showcased at displays and multimedia performances worldwide from 2013 to 2014, as well as in an online gallery. Submissions must be received by Oct. 21, 2012.

This new book, published through NASA’s Nutritional Biochemistry Laboratory, is a fun look at space food and the nutritional needs of humans who work in space.  It also provides an overview of previous space missions (including videos and photos from some of the programs) and lessons about different kinds of research and why they matter to NASA and the space program.

The book has some excellent STEM content for educators looking for space related content at appropriate grade levels.  The book includes a glossary, a science content standards map, and classroom ideas packaged in an educator’s guide.
