MS PHD’s Program for Minority Students in Earth System Science – Deadline Sept 8, 2009

The Minorities Striving and Pursuing Higher Degrees of Success in Earth System Science, or MS PHD’S, initiative was developed by and for underrepresented minorities to facilitate increased participation in Earth system science. Each year, the initiative engages 30 minority undergraduate and graduate students in a series of activities.

The project starts with orientation and a broad Earth system science and engineering exposure during MS PHD’S community-building activities at the American Geophysical Union fall meeting in San Francisco, Calif.

Participants will engage in additional professional development activities at one of the MS PHD’S organizational partners’ meetings. These activities could include attending meetings of the American Meteorological Society, the American Society of Limnology and Oceanography, the National Association of Black Geologists and Geophysicists, and the Oceanography Society, among others. Each participant will attend the meeting that most closely aligns with his or her specific academic and professional interests.

The final phase will occur at the National Academies in Washington, D.C., where participants will visit government agencies and engage in dialogs with professional society and foundation representatives. Each student will also receive a scholarship award of up to $1,000 and participate in a tour of NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md.

The deadline for submitting the online application is Sept. 8, 2009.

POLAR-PALOOZA is a national tour featuring public presentations entitled “Stories From a Changing Planet.” These tales of adventure and science are told by a charismatic “cast” of characters, using HD video and authentic props — such as a piece of ice core 2,000 years old, or a caribou parka — to bring polar research to life. Each three-day stop on the tour will include special programs for schools, workshops for K-12 educators and museum volunteers, briefings for local news media and business leaders, and camp-ins for Girl Scouts and Boys and Girls Clubs. MS PHD’S in Earth System Science Initiative

The MS PHD’S in Earth System Science Initiative provides minority undergraduate and graduate students with opportunities for increased exposure to, interaction with and participation in the Earth system science community. The Professional Development Program was carefully crafted utilizing community input, insight gained from the 2003 Ocean Sciences Program, as well as other efforts designed to engage minority students in science and engineering fields.

The Professional Development Program will engage 30 minority undergraduate and graduate student participants in a series of activities (conducted in three phases) designed to:

  • Increase exposure to the Earth system science community, via participation in scientific conferences, mentoring relationships, virtual activities, and fieldtrips
  • Enhance professional skills, grantmanship, oral and written communication
  • Provide resources regarding future funding, education and career opportunities
  • Facilitate networking opportunities with established researchers and educators
  • Provide on-going interaction, communication and support via membership within a virtual community comprised of peers, junior- and senior-level researchers, and educators committed to facilitating the full participation of minorities in Earth system science.

Applications for 2007 are currently being accepted.  Phase I of the 2007-2008 MS PHD’S Professional Development Program will occur December 8-14, 2007, in San Francisco. The deadline for completed student participant application packages is September 2, 2007.
